Jana Warren’s Monday morning started off extremely early and came with a plateful of problems. "The Clearfield police showed up at our door 12:30 this morning. He said did you know your windows had been shot out?” Warren says she hadn’t heard anything and, of course, did not know about her truck windows. She immediately went outside to see the damage. She says shattered glass was everywhere – on the ground, on the seats and in the back of the truck. Police told her they were probably busted by some bb gun wielding vandals.
I asked her, at that moment, what went through her mind. Her answer, "I thought, are we being targeted or did we do something to someone?” Those were here immediate thoughts. Then she thought about what it would take to fix the windows. "Insurance didn't cover it, and it’s a hardship for me – that’s three windows I have to replace and its getting cold."
Unfortunately, Warren's story is just one of couple hundred in Davis County. Detective Kyle Jeffries says, "We've got victims from Clinton to Kaysville." He says the problem started in September and now totals 65-70 cases - just in Clearfield. And he said, just last night they “had 10 more calls that came in.” And those are the cases they know about. I asked him if he thinks there are more cases out there. His response, "If we have 65 there are probably 200 out there. And that's just cases - the windows in each case of course there have been several." That means that hundreds of windows have been broken throughout Davis County in the past few months.
Police have identified a couple of culprits, but they say it is not just one group committing the crimes. Regarding the investigation Jeffries says, "We've interviewed a couple of kids who have admitted to doing it. But the next night we have 10-15 more so we know its not just one group of kids - its several groups that are doing it."
Warren says knowing that - doesn't help. In fact, she is “angry” and “upset about it." But for now, she - and all the other victims - can only hope police will soon get a beat on the vandals and end their window breaking crime spree.
