SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Polls are open Tuesday for the 2009 General Municipal Election. Compared to a normal election year, your vote could be worth a lot more.
During an off year, voter turnout can be extremely low. The less people who cast their ballot, the more your vote counts. For example, of the nearly 260,000 registered voters in the state of Utah, less that 28,000 actually made it to the polls during the primary election a month and a half ago, that's basically 11%. If those numbers carry over to the municipal election, voters who show up will have a bigger voice on this year's key issues.
Here are some of the issues:
Salt Lake City's Proposition One. It asks for a $125 million bond to pay for a new public safety complex for police and fire fighters.
The Granite School District Bond. It asks voters to allow the district to sell $250 million dollars worth of obligation bonds to build three new schools, replace five existing schools, and air condition all remaining schools.
In addition to these initiatives, many cities mayor and city council races are also on the ballot.
Polls opened Tuesday at 7:00 a.m., they will close at 8:00 p.m.
